Gallery Hyundai is pleased to present Jin Han Lee’s solo exhibition Lucid Dreams from November 6 to December 22, 2024. Lucid Dreams marks Lee’s first solo exhibition at Gallery Hyundai, providing a comprehensive overview of the fifteen-year-long practice. The exhibition features 25 works that span her artistic journey from moving to London in 2007 and the start of her career as an artist in 2008 to her recent works following her return to Korea. Lee’s lively paintings cut across the abstract and figurative to channel emotions and thoughts that are hard to verbalize, such as estrangement experienced from language differences while living abroad, the emotions surrounding parting with a lover, and the intimacy conveyed through warmth. The recurring motifs and dynamic brushstrokes imbue her oeuvre with signature liveliness, reflecting the movement of language, human relationships, and memory that are constantly morphing like life itself, offering a unique and dreamlike visual experience.  

The title Lucid Dreams metaphorically represents Jin Han Lee’s artistic oeuvre, where her inner personal narratives are presented through scenes where dreams and reality intertwine to convey universal human resonances. Moreover, she invites viewers to freely engage with the works as if stepping into a dream. Like the world of dreams that works through structures of symbolic language but creates narratives by deconstructing and recomposing them, Jin Han Lee captures “untranslatable” moments that only painting can articulate from fissures between individual and language, cultures, and each painting. 

Embarking upon the image plane of a perspective around the vanishing point, a hallmark of traditional Renaissance painting, Lee’s painting soon evolved into heterogeneous pictorial spaces that amalgamate the tradition of linear perspective with elements of modernism since 2010. At times, she accents these abstract landscapes with popular cultural references such as neologisms, Korean popular music, comics, and literature. Lee’s stylistic journey continued into an exciting new realm with the experimentation of VR (virtual reality) during her artist residency in 2021. This experience kindled the artist’s reflection on the essential language of painting, leading to new works where brushstrokes similar to that of East Asian calligraphy seem to “pull” outwards toward viewers, creating a three-dimensional sense of space.  

Meanwhile, recurring motifs such as feet, the sun and moon, and love variegate and expand as fluidly as Lee’s pushing and pulling brushstrokes that challenge spatial boundaries of traditional painting. Lee’s works produced in the UK from about 2008 to 2021 often reflected the artist’s experience in foreign cultures and languages, often focusing on a single motif inspired by specific episodes in daily life. Since returning to Korea in 2022, she has merged various motifs from past and present, building scenes with unique rhythms and narrative connections. The thematic expansion from personal experience to universal human experiences speaks to her inclusive philosophy that locates possibilities of communing with the wider world by sharing the innermost, deeply personal experiences in pictorial spaces.

갤러리현대는 이진한 작가의 개인전 《Lucid Dreams》를 11월 6일부터 12월 22일까지 개최한다. 이번 전시는 이진한 작가가 갤러리현대와 함께하는 첫 개인전이다. 2007년 런던으로 건너가 2008년 본격적인 작품 활동을 시작한 시점부터, 15년간의 영국 생활과 귀국한 이후 현재까지의 작품 25점을 집약적으로 선보이는 전시이다. 이진한은 타국에서 경험한 언어적 소외감과 사랑하는 연인과의 이별, 체온을 통해 전달되는 친밀함 등 언어로 표현하기 어려운 사고와 감정을 특유의 추상과 형상적 특징을 넘나드는 생동감 있는 회화로 표현해 왔다. 변주되는 모티프와 붓질에서 비롯된 생동감은 그의 작업 세계를 가로지르는 특징으로, 삶 그 자체와 같이 항상 생동하는 언어, 인간관계, 그리고 기억과 맞물려 독창적이고 몽환적인 화면을 선사한다.

전시 제목 《Lucid Dreams》는 개인적이고 내밀한 이야기를 꿈과 현실이 혼합된 듯한 장면들로 선보이며 인간 내면의 보편적 울림을 발현하는 이진한의 작업 세계 전반을 은유한다. 나아가, 마치 꿈의 세계에 들어온 듯 관객에게 자유롭게 작품을 관람하기를 제안한다. 상징적 언어의 구조로 작동하지만 그것을 해체, 재배치하며 내러티브를 생성하는 꿈의 세계처럼, 이진한 작가의 회화는 개인과 언어, 문화, 각 작품 사이의 간극에서 현실의 언어로는 설명되지 않는 꿈을 풀이하듯 회화만이 전달할 수 있는 ‘번역 불가능한(untranslatable)’ 순간을 화면에 구성한다. 

그의 작업 여정은 전통 회화의 주요 요소인 소실점을 중심으로 공간을 형성하는 르네상스적 화면에서 시작하여 2010년도를 기점으로 전통 회화의 원근법과 모더니즘 회화의 속성이 한 화면에 공존하는 이질적인 회화 공간으로 연결되며 때로 추상적 풍경에 신조어, 한국 대중음악, 만화, 문학 등의 대중문화의 레퍼런스를 결합한다. 그리고 2021년 레지던시에서의 가상현실(VR) 실험을 계기로 회화의 본질적 언어를 고민하며 바깥쪽으로 돌출하는 듯한, 동양 서예와 유사한 붓질이 3차원적 공간감을 형성하는 화면까지 형식적인 진화를 거듭해 왔다. 

한편, 그의 작업 세계 전반에 걸쳐 소개되는 ‘발’, ‘해와 달’, ‘사랑’ 등 다양한 모티프도 밀고 당기는 공간감 넘치는 붓질만큼이나 유동적으로 변주하고 확장되어 왔다. 약 2008년부터 2021년까지 영국에서 제작한 작업에서는 작가와 그를 둘러싼 타국의 언어와 문화가 타자 대 타자의 관계로 드러나며 일상 속 특정한 경험을 하나의 모티프로 표현했다면, 2022년 귀국 이후에는 그간 등장했거나 새롭게 모습을 드러내는 다양한 모티프들을 한 화면에 융합하고 그들간에 독특한 리듬과 서사적 연결성을 갖는 화면을 구축하기 시작했다. 이 과정에서 개인적 경험에서 희로애락으로의 주제적 확장은 자신 내면의 가장 사적인 경험을 회화 공간에 담아냄으로써 구조화된 언어 너머에서의 보편적 소통 가능성을 찾고자 하는 이진한의 포용적 회화관을 잘 보여준다.
