Gallery Hyundai is pleased to present Ayoung Kim's solo exhibition, 《Syntax and Sorcery》, from August 10 to September 14. Ayoung Kim reconstructs historical facts and cutting-edge contemporary issues such as Korean modern and contemporary history, geopolitics, immigration, and transnational movement into a complex narrative through extensive research, which has drawn attention from the domestic and international art world. Kim crosses the boundaries of mediums such as video, sound, performance, novel, and text and creates multi-dimensional and fluid narratives through speculative narrative/fiction-making, narratology, worldbuilding, and mythmaking. Her works, which go beyond the existing visual aesthetics created with her singular artistic approach and imagination, have been showcased at major international biennales and domestic/foreign institutions such as Venice Biennale, Asian Art Biennale, Gwangju Biennale, Busan Biennale, Palais de Tokyo, National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea, and Leeum Samsung Museum of Art.
Ayoung Kim's solo exhibition, 《Syntax and Sorcery》, tells the story of a female delivery rider named Ernst Mo (an anagram of 'monster'). Ernst Mo lives in Seoul, a fictional city postulated between techno-orientalism and Asian futurism, working as a rider (so-called 'Dancer') for a powerful delivery platform called Delivery Dancer. The god-like Dancemaster, an AI algorithm system that records, manages, and supervises the Dancers' movement and loyalty, contracts, and distorts space and time like it is using Chukjibeop (a magical method of contracting space), enabling Dancers to conduct delivery as fast as light. Dancemaster's navigation system calculates the shortest distance from the starting point to the destination, informing the Dancers of the straight path embroidered in the city. Incessant delivery calls and the tentacles of infinitely generated delivery paths induce a labyrinthine delirium. Following the commands of the app device that transmits the Dancemaster's instruction, the Dancers 'dance' non-stop through areas A, B, C, D, and E of the city as if they were dancing. The identity of what Ernst Mo delivers remains ambiguous. From one day on, Ernst Mo arrives in another possible world, perfectly identical to her own. There, she encounters En Storm (another anagram of 'monster'), a counterpart, a ghostly entity that perfectly resembles herself. Each time they meet, spacetime becomes heavier, and time flows slowly. Ernst Mo, a former Ghost Dancer, seeks counseling to make a way out of this situation and to avoid En Storm, but fate keeps bringing them together. Soon, Ernst Mo receives the penalty fatal for her career as a Dancer, and...
Based on her interest in 'various subjects and events that cross borders,' Ayoung Kim has been creating works on involuntary migration from an ecological, political, economic, and social perspective happening across borders. Continuing her research on migration and the migrants, Kim turned into platform workers such as delivery riders, who connect people's disconnected relationships in the era of a pandemic. She began to look into the lives of female delivery riders, particularly those on motorbikes, met and interviewed the veterans, and even accompanied them on their deliveries. She combines her long-standing interest in Possible Worlds Theory with the bizarre bodily sensations and the distorted sense of space and time that delivery riders experience in their interconnection with apps. According to the theory, our world is one of the countless worlds. According to such logic, the existence of two or more perfectly identical worlds becomes plausible. The constituents in these identical worlds may even be perfectly the same as those in others. Applying this theory, Kim creates a speculative fiction that follows Ernst Mo, a female delivery rider existing in a fictional city, meeting an entity identical to her.
"Dancemaster always likes to keep the action to a minimum. For Dancemaster, optimization is synonymous with elegance."
"As usual, the Han River is soaked in antidepressants, antihistamines, antibiotics and anesthetics! It’s 7pm, evening peak time is back. We'll take you to the most elegant routes in Seoul!"
—from Delivery Dancer's Spher
Ghost Dancers A, located in the center of the exhibition space on the first floor of Gallery Hyundai, is a work of two helmets hanging from the ceiling, facing each other as if they are in confrontation. Black wires that run through the helmets, reminiscent of parts of a mutilated mechanical body from a science fiction movie, descend to the floor like a spinal cord or intestines. The faces of two helmets play game-engine-configured videos of delivery riders riding through the streets and alleys of an eerie city. In the video, Ernst Mo and En Storm's bikes sprint back and forth at extraordinary speeds in a breathtaking and ecstatic race. The video installation work Stipulation, sitting dreadfully on one side of the exhibition hall on the first floor, shows a mobile app that non-stops the times and locations received from the Dancemaster as if possessed by a ghost. Stipulation allows the audience to imagine and experience the sensation of the perfect synchronization of the Dancers' bodies with the app under the governance of the algorithm as they turn on the app, receive calls, check the light condition, follow the route, and make a delivery.
The 24-minute video work Delivery Dancer's Sphere, screened on the basement floor of the exhibition space, is a comprehensive guide to the worldview that encompasses the basis of all work shown in the exhibition. Delivery Dancer's Sphere tells the story of Ernst Mo, a delivery rider in the real world, and her encounter with En Storm, a counterpart from another possible world. Ernst Mo narrates her duties as a Dancer and the unusual events she has recently experienced in a weary and drowsy voice as if fatigued from work. In this work, Ayoung Kim, who has recently been thinking about syntactic and material reimagination of video production methods through VR and other mediums, devises a hybrid image production method that visually reveals the physical support of mixed reality/multi-reality and the infinite possibility of possible worlds. Like in the live-action shooting of Ernst Mo rampaging through the streets and alleys of an ominous, gloomy, and rainy city, the artist actively utilizes virtual-retinal image creation tools such as 3D volumetric scanners, game engines, and digital avatar creation tools. By sporadically juxtaposing images created with the aforementioned tools with the shots taken in real life, Kim expands her interest in 'magical beings that transcend syntax' with her fuller command of forms and mediums.
Evening Peak Time Is Back, a gigantic 20-meter-long, 3-meter-tall wallpaper installation occupying both walls of the exhibition hall on the second floor, was created in collaboration with the webtoon artist ‘1172’. The work is set in a virtual, game-engine-realized city, featuring two characters, presumed to be Ernst Mo and En Storm. It consists of three sequences: one where the two characters are caressing each other on a motorcycle, one where they are sitting on their respective motorcycles and having a friendly chat, and a near contentious moment when a Vajra (a symbol of the thunderbolt that is said to assuage affliction) is about to be thrown from one to the other. The recurring motorcycle race scene from Delivery Dancer's Sphere, which suggests the relationship between the two protagonists and the scene where they met, stayed, and talked in a place were transformed into a webtoon style. To expand the worldview of Ernst Mo and En Storm and their complicated and nuanced relationship, Kim deploys the GL (Girls' Love) culture, a subcultural genre in web novels and webtoons focusing on the romance between women. By employing the visual elements of GL, considered peripheral and niche in Korea's subcultural realm, she has created a speculative and subversive visual narrative for female delivery riders who are racial, class, and gender minorities. Ghost Dancers B is paired with Ghost Dancers A on the first floor, wearing the same rider outfits and helmets Ernst Mo and En Storm wore in the video. As if the two characters jumped out into reality and had been fighting, the broken glasses on the floor and overbearing postures hinting violence allude to an ambivalent reading of the situation between catastrophe and salvation, just like the relationship between the two protagonists. These two works permeate and multiply in the exhibition space by reflecting the worldview explored in Delivery Dancer's Sphere, an emblem of the protagonists and an image of another 'I' in another possible world.
Hanging inside the exhibition hall on the second floor are three sculpture pieces of the series titled Orbit Dance. Orbit Dance is a symbol that structurally completes the main content and concept of this exhibition, which continues to appear in the video Delivery Dancer's Sphere and its segmented versions on LED panel screens. Orbit Dance North, Orbit Dance East, and Orbit Dance West are circular sculptures that shine like lit planets and have a pathological fractal and infinitely bifurcating structure. This spherical structure, which is interlocked horizontally and vertically and thus inseparable, symbolizes the two protagonists' entangled relationship, a topological maze in which the Dancers get lost, and new navigational routes through which the Delivery Dancer sends out notifications. The relief-like fractal structure of Orbit Dance 3 O'clock, Orbit Dance 6 O'clock, and Orbit Dance 10 O'clock is reflected in the mirrors to form a complete sphere. This is reminiscent of Ernst Mo and En Storm mirroring each other, suggesting the possibility that our world may even be a reflection of another possible world.
Ayoung Kim tells the story of the 'truth' behind what we believe to be the 'fact' through a journey of constant migration and overthrow. In the midst of a global crisis that has overturned our faith in facts and made the future unpredictable, Ayoung Kim's work stimulates our speculative imagination and provides an opportunity to face the missing and forgotten 'truth' of this world. Ayoung Kim's solo exhibition, 《Syntax and Sorcery》, explores the emigration of contemporary subjects governed by app algorithms and whose digital footprints are being collected. It is a story of magical beings who meet upon the collision of various worlds that transcend syntactic boundaries. Imagine what the 'I' of another world will be like, born from the possibility of the existence of other countless possible worlds that started with an 'I.'

(Evening Peak Time Is Back)〉은 웹툰 작가 1172와의 협업으로 완성되었다.
