BERLIN

Gallery Hyundai is proud to present BERLIN, a solo exhibition by the artist Yun-Hee Toh. Consisting of around 40 works created between 2016 and 2021, the BERLIN exhibition clearly captures Toh’s bold risk-taking and extraordinary transformation. The exhibition space on Gallery Hyundai’s first floor presents seven works created at her Berlin studio. Serving as a starting point for the exhibition, these works could be seen as early models, boasting a lyricism perfected as the artist was advancing to the next stage of the transformation she attempted with her 2015 exhibition Night Blossom. On the basement level is a natural blending of artwork created at Toh’s Berlin and Seoul studios, offering the viewer a feast of colors and textures. On the second floor, the exhibition space is filled with recent work and large work measuring up to three meters in height, most of which was produced in Seoul during the pandemic.

Yun-Hee Toh is one of Korea’s premier female artists, someone who has spent the past four decades creating a poetic visual language. She has also drawn international notice, as when she became the first Asian artist to hold a solo exhibition at Switzerland’s Galerie Beyeler (founded by Ernst Beyeler, one of the 21st century’s top art dealers and founder of Art Basel) in 2007. “My work is a process in search of the hidden beauty behind phenomena,” the artist has said. Indeed, she uses her exquisite pictorial language to capture things that are concealed from the eyes or that exist hidden on the other side of the phenomena we see: fragments and secret corners of unfamiliar lives, or sides that remain obscured.

Toh’s solo exhibition at Gallery Hyundai was Unknown Signal (2011), in which she represented artwork rendering organic images in graphite, which resembled cells, fossil sections, or roots; these were then repeatedly painted over in varnish. Evoking an ancient temporality and philosophically reflecting on the essence and origins of life, these works were given literary titles that called to mind works of poetry, such as Unreadable Writings, Light Green Grains of Sand Sparkle Inside My Eyelids, Breathing Ice, and A Certain Time is Darkened by the Sunlight. These were the result of the artist exploring painting that was situated somewhere in between the acts of “writing” and “painting.”

Refusing to confine herself to any one painting methodology, Toh set up a studio east of Berlin in 2012 as she set out in search of something new. She was fascinated by Berlin’s uniquely decadent atmosphere and unusual gravity and sought to achieve a new creative transformation there. The physical move from Seoul to Berlin awakened something deep within her. Leaving behind all of her familiar and comfortable environments—the artwork, places, and experiences she was accustomed to—she was able to reflect on memories and moments since her children, and to rediscover her internal identity and original self in the process. As she describes it, the exhibition title BERLIN represents the strategic hideaway where Toh achieved a turning point as an artist, while also “symbolizing things like life, ideas, and senses, journey of life and the spirit” for someone just emerging from her fifties.

Toh shared the first results of this change in her 2015 solo exhibition Night Blossom at Gallery Hyundai. Here, she left all of the artwork untitled, alluding to a break from the literary elements previously presented in her work. She also began introducing color, something that she had refrained from using since the mid-2000’s. In the process of transferring her images concretely onto the canvas, she relied on the sense of her hands, making active use of this more “primitive” means than the traditional artistic tools of pencil and brush. This assertive use of the hand had the effect of narrowing a physical distance between the canvas and the artist’s inner self. In the process, an unreal world that had already existed within the artist began to disclose itself on the canvas. Through fantastical and colorful images that seem to billow out from somewhere deep in the canvas, the artist shares “colors that truly begin to shine in the dark”—along with “another side to the world, one that only reveals itself at night.”

Coming seven years after Night Blossom, the solo exhibition BERLIN sees Yun-Hee Toh’s sharing a new world of painting that is quite different from her previous works. More than simply making an active use of color as one of the basic languages and materials of painting, she has begun accentuating its physical properties even more. Where Night Blossom had thin layers of paint emanating with the artist’s hand like clouds of petals in full bloom over the canvas, the paint in BERLIN is a mass of color with powerful materiality and the sensual texture of a living organism. Toh shares a bewitching aesthetic that parts ways with more familiar painting approaches—as seen in the way she creates empty spaces by creating holes on the canvas among the multiple layers formed through the mixing and overlapping of untrammeled lines and masses of color.

Stimulating the full range of the viewer’s perceptions and senses, the images in Yun-Hee Toh’s work appear like vast portals into another world—like colorful bouquets of flowers, or the afterimage of a deserted riverside at sunset. Touches like the color panoramas and waves that dominate the frame call to mind the detailed images of Impressionist painting, while the marks left by the artist’s hands as she clenched and rapidly unleashed her paints evoke the ancient wall paintings found in caves. According to the artist, these scenes are the abstract landscapes in which the different spaces and times she has experienced over the course of her life—things built up within her over time—have finally revealed themselves. In her tenacious experiments with using the language of painting to capture the worlds of the image formed by these infinitesimal perceptions, Toh finally made a shift from her previous lyrical and metaphoric work toward an approach based on “pictorial language.” Many conflicting elements both clash and harmonize in direct and sensual ways in her new series: thin and shiny surfaces with thick and murky layers, dull masses with nimble lines, brightness with darkness, intense colors with subtle energies, vast movements with movements that are almost imperceptible.

To quickly capture the bright lights, swirling colors, and floating shapes that flicker before her eyes from moment to moment before they evaporate, the artist uses every sort of tool—her own hand, her brush, the edge of a broken brush, a glass bottom, a hammer—as if in a kind of hand-to-hand combat with the canvas. From the traditional act of simply “painting,” she has progressed into dynamic gestures: feeling, rubbing, dabbing, layering, and slashing her paints. The juxtaposition and layering of masses of paint as condensations of internal energy presents a new world of abstraction that expands into the realm of the sculptural. Invoking an internal language through acts that are more intuitive and physical, Toh stresses, “Abstraction is not fantasy. It is not illusion, reverie, or imagination, but something that begins with perception. It’s about being aware of the reality—and about making that even richer in a metaphorical sense!”
