Widely regarded as a highlight of Art Basel, the 2023 edition of Unlimited features Moon Kyungwon & Jeon Joonho’s immersive video installation, News from Nowhere: Eclipse (2022–2023). Giovanni Carmine, director of Kunsthalle Sankt Gallen, returns this year as director of Unlimited’s programming, staging a carefully curated selection of 76 large-scale installations.
Moon Kyungwon & Jeon Joonho’s News from Nowhere: Eclipse narrates a human being’s free will and struggle for life as he sails amid an endless sea. The work premiered at the artist duo’s solo exhibition in 2022 at the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa, Japan, where it received positive reviews. Film actor Ryu Jun-yeol portrays the protagonist, who leads a precarious life isolated on an open sea but does not cease to hope for and seek a resolution to his circumstances. In tandem with video scenes replete with ironic metaphors and visual symbolism, a light installation consisting of horizontal and vertical scaffolding surrounds the entirety of the exhibition space, creating an intensely immersive environment in sync with the video’s sound and images. As alluded to by the title “Eclipse,” the narrative and scenes of the video flash before our eyes like a repetition of infinite time consisting of repeated split moments.
News from Nowhere: Eclipse marks the latest extension of the collaborative project News from Nowhere that the two artists have led and organized since 2009 as a means of reflecting on the crisis facing contemporary art and our current conditions of life. News from Nowhere, an ambitious project that transcends the traditional boundaries of art, continues to this day, having traversed diverse venues around the world such as dOCUMENTA (13), Kassel (2012); Sullivan Galleries at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (2013); Migros Museum für Gegenwartskunst, Zurich (2015); the Korean pavilion at the 56th Venice Biennale, Venice (2015); Tate Liverpool, Liverpool (2018–2019); the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (MMCA), Seoul (2021–2022); Art Sonje Center (2022); and the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa (2022).
아트바젤의 하이라이트로 꼽히는 ‘언리메티드’ 섹터에는 문경원 & 전준호의 〈미지에서 온 소식: 이클립스〉(2022-2023)가 공개된다. 작년에 이어 올해도 쿤스트 할레 생갈렌(Kunst Halle Sankt Gallen)의 디렉터 죠반니 까르미네(Giovanni Carmine)가 언리미티드 프로그램의 감독을 맡아 76점의 대형 설치 작품을 엄선했다.
문경원 & 전준호의 〈미지에서 온 소식: 이클립스〉는 망망대해를 항해하는 한 인간의 삶을 향한 자유 의지와 투쟁을 담은 영상 설치 작품으로, 2022년 일본 가나자와 21세기 미술관에서 열린 듀오 작가의 개인전에서 처음 선보여 호평을 받았다. 영화배우 류준열이 주인공으로 영상에 등장한다. 그는 망망대해에 고립되어 라이프 보트에 의지한 채 위태로운 삶을 살아가지만, 안식을 찾고자 하는 희망과 투쟁을 멈추지 않는다. 역설적인 은유와 시각적 상징이 촘촘한 영상이 상영되는 동안 공간 전체를 감싼 수직과 수평의 조명 장치가 영상의 소리 및 이미지와 싱크를 이루며 몰입감 넘치는 환경을 조성한다. ‘이클립스’라는 작품의 제목처럼, 영상의 이야기와 장면은 무한한 시간의 반복이자 짧은 순간의 반복처럼 흘러간다.
〈미지에서 온 소식: 이클립스〉은 두 작가가 2009년부터 동시대 미술과 삶의 조건이 처한 위기를 성찰하며 공동 프로젝트 〈미지에서 온 소식(News from Nowhere)〉의 연장선상에서 제작되었다. 미술의 제한된 범주를 뛰어넘는 이 야심 찬 프로젝트는 카셀 도쿠멘타(2012), 미국 시카고예술대학교 설리번갤러리(2013), 스위스 미그로스 현대미술관(2015), 베니스비엔날레 한국관(2015), 영국 테이트리버풀(2018-2019), 국립현대미술관 서울(2021), 일본 가나자와 21세기 미술관(2022) 등으로 프로젝트 장소를 옮기며 현재에 이르고 있다.
