Gallery Hyundai is pleased to announce its Frieze Los Angeles 2023 solo presentation of Yun-Hee Toh, one of Korea’s premier female artists who has constructed a singularly poetic visual language over the last three decades. Gallery Hyundai (Booth B09) will debut approximately twenty new works that Toh created between her Seoul and Berlin studios. Toh’s paintings captivate the eyes of viewers with their simultaneous sense of harmony and dissonance between multitudinous layers ranging from primary colors to monotones as well as a sensual materiality achieved by the accretion and amalgamation of masses of vibrant color. 

Toh typically works between Berlin and Seoul, and her recent stay in Seoul—with the coldness, sunlight, and darkness that are concomitant with Korea’s winter—has provided the seeds for her new works. The artist’s delicate perceptiveness during her daily life during the winter led to works that are undoubtedly sensual: the paintings appear submerged yet floating, cold yet warm, and heavy yet luminous. To quickly capture the bright lights, swirling colors, and floating shapes flickering before her eyes from moment to moment before they vanish, the artist uses every tool at her disposal—her own hand, her brush, the edge of a broken brush, the bottom of a glass, a hammer—as if she is engaged in a kind of hand-to-hand combat with the canvas. The traditional act of painting is transformed into dynamic gestures: feeling, rubbing, dabbing, layering, and slashing her paints. And the juxtaposition and accumulation of masses of paint as a condensing of internal energy presents a new world of abstraction that expands into the realm of the sculptural.

Yun-Hee Toh’s works stimulate the full range of the viewer’s perception and senses, leading them towards stories rising from the depths of the subconscious. Often, images in her works appear as portals to other worlds, conjuring countless afterimages of states of nature and landscapes: colorful bouquets of flowers; grass flowers sprawling across a field, or their gradual withering; and a lonesome riverbank during the fleeting sunset. Furthermore, these canvases are abstract landscapes where the various times and spaces that the artist has personally experienced and that have accumulated within her are now gradually revealing themselves. Invoking an internal language through intuitive, physical acts, Toh stresses: “Abstraction is not fantasy. It is not illusion, reverie, or imagination, but something that begins with perception. It’s about being aware of reality—and about making that even richer in a metaphorical sense.”

갤러리현대는 <프리즈 LA 2023>에서 지난 30여 년 동안 시적인 시각 언어를 구축해온 한국을 대표하는 여성 화가, 도윤희의 솔로 전시를 선보인다. 갤러리현대의 부스 B09에서는 작가가 베를린과 서울 스튜디오를 오가며 작업한 신작 20여 점을 첫 공개한다. 원색에서부터 모노톤까지의 다층적인 색의 조화와 어긋남, 물질성을 드러내는 색 덩어리들이 쌓이고 뒤섞이며 만들어내는 육감적인 질감이 보는 이를 매혹하는 작품이다.  

베를린과 서울을 오가며 작업하는 그는 겨울 동안 한국에 머물며 서울의 추위, 눈, 햇빛, 어둠에서 작업의 시작점을 찾았다. 공기, 온도, 날씨, 냄새, 빛 등 작가가 존재하는 환경의 모든 요소들은 작가에게 영감이 된 것이다. 그리고 그의 겨울 속 일상은 작가 특유의 예민한 감각을 통해 가라앉은 듯 부유하며, 차가운 듯 따뜻하고, 무거우면서도 영롱한 작품으로 탄생했다. 작가는 시시때때로 자신의 눈앞에 아른거리는 찬란한 빛과 소용돌이치는 색들, 부유하는 형태가 증발해버리기 전에 재빠르게 붙잡기 위해, 캔버스 앞에서 마치 육탄전을 벌이듯 손, 붓, 부러진 붓의 모서리, 유리병, 망치 등 도구를 가리지 않고 활용한다. ‘그림을 그린다’는 전통적 행위는 물감을 만지고, 주무르고, 찍고, 쌓고, 선을 긋는 역동적 제스처로 나아가며, 내면의 에너지가 응축된 물감 덩어리의 병치와 축적은 조각적 영역으로까지 확장된 새로운 추상의 세계를 제시한다. 

도윤희 작품은 우리의 인식과 감각을 총체적으로 자극하여 심연의 이야기로 이끌어 간다. 때로 그의 작품의 이미지들은 다른 세계로 통하는 입구가 되어, 형형색색의 꽃다발이나, 들판에 흐드러진 풀꽃, 혹은 그것들이 시들어가는 과정, 해 질 녘 강변의 쓸쓸한 잔상 등 수 없는 자연의 모습과 풍경의 잔상을 불러일으킨다. 또한, 이 화면들은 작가가 경험한 다양한 시공간이 내면에 쌓였다가 이제서야 서서히 모습을 드러낸 추상적 풍경이다. 보다 직관적이고 육체적인 행위를 통해 내면의 언어를 소환하는 도윤희는 강조한다. “추상은 환상이 아니에요. 환상, 몽상, 상상 같은 게 아니고 인식에서 시작하는 거예요. 실체를 인식하는 것. 그리고 그것을 은유적으로 더욱 풍요롭게 만드는 것!”이라고.
