Gallery Hyundai is pleased to present Stillness in Action: John Pai and Minjung Kim at Frieze New York at The Shed (May 5-9) and Online Viewing Room (May 5-14). John Pai and Minjung Kim were both born in Korea but later moved abroad — Pai to the United States, and Kim to Italy. Living in their newly adopted countries, the two artists proceeded to develop singular working processes that are reflected in their immediately recognizable works. Paring down their working processes to the barest, most essential elements — steel rods (Pai), mulberry hanji paper (Kim), fire (both)—the artists cast an almost monastic focus on these seemingly humble materials, connecting individual units to one other in a manner that creates entirely new worlds.

For Pai and Kim, the repetitive, meditative process of incremental creation (welding together thin steel rods or layering strips of burned paper) is just as important as the fascinating works that result. Pai’s sculptures, imbued with a complex vibrance that suggests motion, at times invoke the artist’s childhood memories of gazing at the bright stars outside his family’s rural home in Korea and imagining that he could travel among them. Likewise, Minjung Kim’s Mountain series recalls the artist’s memories of the waves and mountains in her life while embodying the eternal cycle of paper and ink. Fittingly, the works of John Pai and Minjung Kim embody the passage of time in a manner that is simultaneously deliberate and yet subject to chance. For both artists, their time is now.

갤러리현대는 2021년 5월 5일부터 9일까지 열리는 프리즈 뉴욕에서 <스틸니스 인 액션: 존 배와 김민정>을 선보인다. 존 배와 김민정은 한국에서 태어나 각기 미국과 유럽으로 이주하여 작업해왔다. 새롭게 정착한 나라에서 존 배와 김민정은 서구의 미술사조를 흡수하면서도 자신만의 예술 언어를 찾는 긴 여정을 통해 각자 고유의 작업 방식을 발전시켰으며, 두 작가는 작업 과정을 최소화하여, 각기 철과 한지를 기본 요소로 사용하고 이 재료들에 ‘불’이라는 요소를 더했다. 마치 수도자와 같은 태도로 이러한 소박한 재료를 다루는 이 작가들은 하나의 유닛에 다른 유닛을 연결하고 더해가는 과정을 통해 전적으로 새로운 세계를 창조한다. 이들에게 반복적이고 명상적인 점진적 창조의 과정은 그 결과물인 매혹적인 작품만큼 중요한 요소이다.

움직임을 제안하는 복잡한 공명에 고취된 존 배의 조각은 때로 작가가 한국의 어린 시절 집 밖에서 한없이 별을 응시하며 그 사이를 떠돌아다니는 상상을 하던 기억을 상기시킨다. 마찬가지로 김민정의 <마운틴> 연작은 종이와 잉크의 영원한 순환을 포괄하면서 물결의 형상화가 산의 이미지를 연상시킨 기억을 따라간다. 존 배와 김민정의 작품은 신중하게 그러나 우연을 섬기는 방식으로 시간의 경과를 담아내는데, 지금이 바로 이 작가들의 시간을 살펴볼 때가 아닐까?
