Gallery Hyundai is pleased to present a variety of works by Korean masters and artists who have rewritten the history of Korean modern and contemporary art at the KIAF ART SEOUL 2020 Online Viewing Room. Modern masters include: Kim Tschang-Yeul, who has reflected the philosophical world of "recurrence" onto his realistic water droplets; Seung-taek Lee, who has experimented with “non-sculptural” materials such as earthenware, godret stones, strings, vinyl, woodblocks, and Hanji papers in order to push the boundaries and limits of art; Chung Sang-Hwa, who has interacted with paintings, layering and filling the canvas surface as if he is performing; Lee Kun-Yong, who presents his innovative perspectives and thoughts on the body and space and the relationship between works and viewers; Lee Kang-So, who has explored the philosophical themes of appearance and disappearance through performances, sculptures, and paintings; and Shin Sung Hy, who had carried on a life-long experiment on the questions about the essence of painting.
The Viewing Room also features the contemporary artists who have established their own artistic world on the conventional Korean artistic identity. The “3-by-3-inch artist” Ik-Joong Kang captures and portrays stories from all over the world on small 3-by-3 canvases; Minjung Kim poetically harmonizes minimal aesthetics with traditional materials such as hanji papers and ink. Yoo Geun-taek applies modern styles and materials onto the traditional ink painting. Seulgi Lee poses a sharp perspective on the modernization of tradition, uniquely interpreting Korean proverbs with geometric patterns. Park Minjoon, on the other hand, vividly gives life to the imaginary characters of his own magical world through his realistic yet delicate brushstrokes, while Myoung Ho Lee explores the representation of photography by separating an object of tree from its inherent context and placing a white canvas behind the tree as a backdrop.
갤러리현대는 KIAF ART SEOUL 2020 온라인 뷰잉룸을 통해 한국 현대미술의 역사를 새로 쓴 거장들과 동시대 미술가의 다채로운 작품을 선보입니다. 캔버스에서 스며 나온 듯 사실적으로 그린 물방울에 ‘회귀(回歸, Recurrence)’라는 철학적 세계를 반영한 김창열, 옹기, 고드랫돌, 노끈, 비닐, 각목, 한지, 책 등 ‘비조각적’ 재료를 작품 제작에 활용하며 미술의 경계와 한계를 실험하는 이승택, 한국 단색화의 거장으로 캔버스의 표면을 칠하고, 덧붙이고, 떼어내고, 메우며 수행하듯 작품과 교감해 온 정상화, 신체, 장소, 관계 등에 대한 독창적인 미학과 사유를 제시하는 이건용, ‘생성과 소멸’이라는 철학적 주제를 퍼포먼스, 조각, 회화 등 다양한 매체로 심화한 이강소, ‘회화의 본질은 무엇인가’를 평생 탐구했던 신성희의 작품을 공개합니다.
일상에서 깨달은 지식과 지혜를 3×3인치의 정사각형 나무판에 한 문장으로 담는 강익중, 한지와 불, 먹 등 동양의 전통적 재료와 기법을 추상 미술의 미학과 시적으로 조화시키는 김민정, 한지에 수묵으로 그리는 한국화에 현대적인 표현법과 소재를 적용하는 유근택, 공예와 구술문화, 동시대 미술의 연관성을 탐구하며 통영의 누비 장인과 협업하는 이슬기는 전통의 현대화라는 문제의식을 자신만의 독특한 시각 언어로 풀어냅니다. 상상의 인물을 환상적인 분위기로 그려내는 박민준, 나무 뒤에 하얀색 캔버스를 세워 나무라는 대상을 자연적 맥락에서 분리하며 사진의 재현성을 탐색하는 이명호 등의 다양한 작품을 한자리에서 만나 보실 수 있습니다.
