Minjung Kim (b. 1962) is a contemporary Korean artist best known for her subtle formal compositions on layered paper. Committed to re-interpreting traditional Korean aesthetics, Kim employs a process-based organization of her thoughts, problems, and whims in each of her artworks. Through the repetitive work of burning and layering mulberry Hanji paper, she conveys the process of emotional healing and meditation. Often colorful and staccato, the artist describes her calligraphic work in emotional terms: “The movement, the colors, they are so calm and peaceful. They are my state of mind,” she says. Born in 1962 in Gwangju, Republic of Korea, Kim was encouraged by her family to pursue her artistic inclination from an early age, studying under famed water colorist Yeongyun Kang. She enrolled at the Hong Ik University in Seoul from 1980 until 1985. Out of her curiosity about the Italian art which led Renaissance, she decided to move to Milan, Italy and later graduated from the Brera Academy of Fine Art in 1991. “Unlike the concept in Korea, there is no distinction between Eastern and Western art. It is more of a matter of differences in materials.” The reason why Kim has chosen mulberry Hanji paper is that it is the best material which she could handle. She began with expressing the musical rhythm through ink, and later went beyond hand-drawing, committing herself to the natural lines created by candle light or incense burn.

After graduating from school, Kim has lived and worked in Italy, presenting her works throughout the world including Italy, Switzerland, China, England, USA, and Israel for over twenty years. She had her solo exhibitions in prominent worldwide galleries and museums, such as Macro - Museo arte contemporanea di Roma, Rome, Italy (2012), OCI Museum of Art, Seoul, Korea (2015), and Hermes Foundation, Singapore (2017). Kim particularly has gained a remarkable attention at the exhibition ‘The Light, The Shade, The Depth’ held in Palazzo Caboto during the Venice Biennale in 2015. She has received numerous honors and high critical acclaim throughout her career, such as her inclusion among important collections like the Fondazione Palazzo Bricherasio in Torino, Italy, and the Museum Sbygningen in Copenhagen, Denmark. In addition, three of her works are currently exhibited as a selected Korean collection at the British Museum. She currently lives and works in between France and the United States.

김민정(b. 1962)은 전통적인 한국의 미학을 재해석하는 데에 전념하며, 한지를 태우고, 태워낸 한지 조각을 여러 겹 쌓아 붙이는 작업을 해오고 있다. 작가는 이러한 반복적인 작업 과정을 통해 감정의 치유와 명상의 과정을 작품에 담아낸다.

먹을 이용한 다채롭고 단음적인 그의 서예 작품에 대해 작가는 감정적 측면에서 “움직임과 색상, 그들은 매우 고요하고 평화롭습니다. 그것은 제 마음 상태를 나타냅니다.” 라고 말한다. 김민정은 1962년 광주에서 태어나, 어린 시절부터 예술적 성향을 추구하며 저명한 수채화가 강연균의 문하에서 미술을 접했고, 홍익대 회화과 학부와 동대학원에서 동양화를 전공했다. 그런 그가 1991년 이탈리아 밀라노의 브레라 미술학교(Brera Academy of Fine Art)로 유학을 떠난 건 서양화, 특히 르네상스를 이끈 이탈리아 미술에 대한 호기심 때문이었다. “한국과 달리 그곳에는 동양화, 서양화라는 개념이 없더라고요. 어떤 재료를 쓰느냐의 차이일 뿐이죠.” 한지를 택한 건 그가 가장 잘 다룰 수 있는 재료였기 때문이며, 처음에는 수묵으로 음악의 리듬감을 표현하다가 손으로 그리는 것을 넘어 촛불이나 향불이 만들어내는 자연스런 선에 몸을 맡겼다.

학교 졸업 후, 이탈리아에 체류하며 창작활동을 펼쳐왔으며, 지난 20여 년간 이탈리아와 스위스, 중국, 영국, 미국, 이스라엘 등에서 작품을 선보였다. 특히, 2012년 로마 마르코 현대미술관, 2015년 서울 OCI 미술관, 2017년 싱가포르 에르메스 파운데이션 등 유수의 갤러리 및 미술관에서 개인전을 가졌으며, 2015년 베니스 비엔날레 기간 중 카보토 궁에서 열린 부대전시 ‘빛, 그림자, 깊이’전으로 큰 주목을 받았다. 그의 작품은 이탈리아 토리노의 폰다치오네 팔라초 브리케라시오(Fondazione Palazzo Bricherasio)와 덴마크 코펜하겐의 스비닌겐 미술관(The Museum Sbygningen)을 포함한 중요 기관들에 소장되어 있다. 또한, 최근 영국 박물관(The British Museum)의 한국관에 작품 3점이 소장되어 전시되고 있다. 그는 현재 프랑스와 미국을 거점으로 활발히 활동하고 있다.
