Iván Navarro (b.1972) is known internationally for his socio-politically charged sculptures of neon and fluorescent light. While his sculptures and installations grow out of the legacy of minimalism and modern design, their cool detachment of form are subverted with pointed sociopolitical critique. Born in Santiago, Chile, Navarro grew up under Pinochet’s brutal military dictatorship known for, among other things, cutting power to remove light to enforce curfews.  His childhood memory of light and the method of suppression and control became the basis for Navarro’s artistic practice.  Using fluorescent and neon lights with mirrors, the materials glow and reflect.  While the history comes from darkness, the works are imbued with a desire for freedom, hope and the liberation via the symbol of light. Navarro’s works are including in numerous collections including, among others, Fonds National d’Art Contemporain Paris, LVMH Collection, Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Inhotim, Museum of Fine Arts Boston, National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art Korea (MMCA), and the Zabludowicz Collection

네온 아트의 떠오르는 별로 평가받는 칠레 출신인 작가 이반 나바로는 네온과 형광등을 사용한 작품을 통해 사회정치적 메시지를 던지는 것으로 국제적 명성을 얻은 작가이다. 그의 조각과 설치는 미니멀리즘과 현대 디자인에서 받은 영향을 바탕으로 날카로운 사회정치적 비판을 담고 있다. 1972년 칠레, 산티아고에서 태어난 이반 나바로는 군부 독재자 아우구스토 피노체트의 잔인한 정권 속에서 성장했다. 피노체트는 1973년 쿠데타를 일으켜 대통령직에 오른 이후 17년간 칠레를 통치하며 반정부 시위대와 정적 등을 무자비하게 탄압해 악명을 떨쳤던 인물이다. 그는 시민들을 가정에 고립시켜 외부 활동을 제한하기 위해 종종 통금을 시행하고 정전이 일어나게 했다. 빛으로 대중을 제어하는 어린 시절의 이 기억은 이반 나바로 작품의 주제와 소재가 되었다. 그는 빛을 내고 그것을 반사, 확대하는 형광등, 네온, 거울을 사용하여 작품을 제작한다. 주목해야 할 점은 작가가 이를 통해 어두운 역사와 현실을 고발할 뿐만 아니라 자유에 대한 갈망, 희망, 그리고 결국 이루어낸 해방을 보여준다는 것이다. 그에게 빛은 희망의 상징이자 그 자체다. 현재 뉴욕을 기점으로 활발한 활동을 펼치고 있는 작가는 마이애미 현대미술관(MOCA, 마이애미), 베니스비엔날레(Venice Biennale, 베니스), 폴카스민갤러리(Paul Kasmin Gallery, 뉴욕) 등 주요 미술기관 및 갤러리에서 전시를 했다.

작가의 작품은 사치콜렉션(Saatchi Collection, 런던), 국립현대미술컬렉션(Fonds National d’Art Contemporain, 파리), 루이비통콜렉션(LVMH Collection, 파리), 허쉬혼미술관(Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, 워싱턴), 버지니아미술관(Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, 버지니아) 등 유명 미술기관 및 콜렉터가 소장하고 있다. 작가의 작품은 2014년 뉴욕 메디슨 스퀘어 파크에 ‘이 땅이 너의 땅’이라는 제목으로 전시되었다. 대형 급수탑에 이민자들의 힘든 삶을 위로하는 메시지를 네온으로 써넣은 이 전시는 현지에서 뜨거운 반응을 일으키며 작가의 위치를 더욱 확고히 하고 있다.
