Yeesookyung

Yeesookyung (b. 1963) is one of Korea’s leading contemporary artists and has presented a variety of works not limited to traditional methods or mainstream art often blurring the boundaries of different media.  In the early stage of her activities, she expanded the spectrum of her work into diverse areas, including installations, performance, video images, and drawing as she dealt with the reality that individuals and society face based on a rich narrative imagination. Since the early 2000s, she has established her own world of art exploring the theme of “translation,” which connects different elements such as the past and present; individuals and others; society and systems; and cultures of different countries. Her best known works include the Translated Vase series, for which she recreates objects in an artistic context by sticking together abandoned pieces of broken ceramics.  The combination of realities reflects her personal heritage as well as global humanistic conditions.

Yeesookyung received her BFA and MFA in painting from Seoul National University, Korea. She has participated in numerous exhibitions including, among many others, Museo e Real Bosco di Capodimonte Naples, Museo D’arte Contemporanea Donnaregina (MADRE) Naples, the Venice Biennale, Liverpool Biennale, National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art Korea (MMCA), Museum of Contemporary Art Taipei, ARKO Art Center, Ilmin Museum of Art, Asia Society Texas Center, Atelier Hermes Seoul, Museum Schloss Oranienbaum Dessau and Gwangju Biennale.

Her works are included in numerous collections including, among others, Leeum Samsung Museum of Art, British Museum, LACMA, Seoul Museum of Art, Salama Bint Hamdan Al Nahyan Foundation Abu Dhabi, M+ Museum, Museum of Fine Arts Boston, National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art Korea, and Bristol Museum
