Working under the overarching theme of "life and art," Woosung Lee (b.1983) explores the act of drawing and the expressive possibilities of painting through various media including drawing, painting, and animation. Beginning with the discovery of objects from the peripheries of everyday life, Lee hopes that his personal moments, mediated through images, will resonate with and connect to someone else's memory. Keenly observing social phenomena and individual responses, he reflects on the stories of people as inseparable from their own time, and gives them visual form. From family members and close friends to everyday scenes-a meal at a local diner, a bus stop, or the Han River Park-, Lee is drawn to the people and places that hold personal resonance.

With a distinctive use of lines and colors that feel both unfamiliar and immediate, Lee creates vivid collective portraits of the younger generation born after the 1980s in Korea and their daily experiences. In his first solo exhibition Bul Bul Bul in 2012, Lee presented People who are Staring Straight Ahead (2012), a large-scale painting measuring six meters wide, which became one of his representative works. Teeming with men in their twenties-his peers at the time—, the work conveys the frustrations of young adults while being assimilated into the social structure, along with the anxieties and despair they face in lower tiers of the socioeconomic ladder. This work paved the way for Lee's solo exhibition after he was selected for the 2013 OCI Young Creatives program hosted by OCl Museum. In the 2013 exhibition, rather than depicting complete human figures, he portrayed fragmented bodies as vessels for his inner struggles, anxieties, divisions, and contradictions as an artist. Works like When Will My Wish Bracelet Break (2013) move beyond generational themes to communicate Lee's own physical and psychological experiences, signaling a return to personal narratives.

이우성은(b.1983) '생활과 미술'이라는 주제로 드로잉, 회화, 애니메이션 등의 다양한 매체를 활용하여 그리는 행위의 의미와 그림의 표현 가능성을 실험하고 있다. 삶의 주변에 자리했을 대상을 발견해 내는 것에서 시작하여 작가 자신의 사적인 순간이 그림을 통해 또 다른 누군가의 기억에 닿아 연결되기를 기대한다. 주변에서 벌어지는 여러 사회적 사건, 사람들의 반응을 보며 한 시대를 살아가는 사람으로서 그들의 이야기에 주목하고 이를 화면 속에 표현한다. 그는 가까운 친구들이나 부모님을 작품의 모델로 삼기도 하고, 밥집의 상차림이나 버스정류장, 한강 공원의 풍경 등 그의 삶과 연결고리를 가진 대상에 관심을 가지고 그린다.

작가는 1980년대 이후 출생한 한국 청년 세대들의 군상과 그들이 겪는 일상을 특유의 선묘와 색조로 생경하면서도 생생하게 표현한다. 작업 초기, 작가는 2012년 첫 개인전 《불 불 불》에서 폭이 6미터에 달하는 대형 회화 정면을 응시하는 사람들〉(2012)을 선보였으며, 이는 그의 대표작이 된다. 또래 20대 남성들을 화면에 한가득 채우며 청년세대가 사회 구조에 편입되는 과정에서 느끼는 부조리함, 사회적 약자로서 겪는 불안, 좌절의 나날들을 담았다. 이 작품은 2013년 0C 미술관에서 주관하는 신진작가 지원 프로그램 'OCI 영 크리에이티브'의 작가로 선정된 이우성의 개인전에 대한 하나의 무대를 마련해주었다. 2013년 개인전에서는 온전한 몸으로써의 인물이라기보다는 파편화된 몸으로 작가로서의 고 민, 불안, 분열, 모순을 보여주었다. 특히 <나의 소원팔찌는 언제 끊어질까>(2013)와 같은 작품은 개인이 속한 세대에 관 한 주제에서 벗어나 작가 자신의 몸과 마음을 표현하며, 그 안에 있는 개인의 이야기로 돌아가고 있음을 보여준다.
