Jaeho JUNG graduated from Seoul National University with BFA in Oriental Painting in 1997, and graduated from same school with MFA in 2001. He had his first solo show on Gongpyeong Art Center in 2001. He also held several other solo shows including Travel to Incheon at Incheon Shinsegae Gallery in 2003, Old Apartment Building as a participant of Kumho Young Artist Program at Kumho Museum of Art in 2005, and Father’s Day at Gallery HYUNDAI in 2009. In Travel to Incheon, Jaeho JUNG depicted his sensation and its atmosphere he felt during the trip, like a documentary film in the eyes of a foreign traveler. The artist usually works with Korean paper and Chinese ink. The works from the series exquisitely delineate his trip to Incheon. Old Apartment Building is a series of sentimental portrayals of apartment buildings, which had a same life span as the artist but are in danger of being demolished because the buildings are too old and frail. In order to appreciate the buildings, the artist went to the local communal offices to research factual information and visited the apartments to search for the trace of life lying beneath the empty buildings, which are abandoned by formal residents who left because of the government funded reconstruction projects for the area. As if standing right in front of the buildings, the frames are fully filled with windows and doors. Since the formation of the works avoids the tradition law of perspective, it might be awkward but this enables the artist to exhibit the trace of life of every single unit in the buildings. In order for him to monumentalize the trace of life of the apartment buildings and people who lived in the buildings, he titled his works in the series as monuments. Father’s Day is a series that records the trace of the past that can be found in old pictures or history. His focus is on the trace of life, in which human and ghost, present and past, and father and son live in symbiosis, rather than on the “life” of humans, which represents the present. And the artist describes the trace of life as ruins. The past which cannot be existed in the present is existed in the space time created by the artist as ruins. There is no phrase or sign in the works, but the trace of life portrayed in the paintings indicates that the past had existed. Instead of creating monuments for each building as in Old Apartment Buildings, the artist named the series as Father’s day to commemorate the past. The artist’s works are in the collection of National Museum of Contemporary Art Seoul and Seoul Museum of Art. Currently he’s teaching as a professor of the Department of Painting at Sejong University.

정재호는 1997년 서울대학교 동양화과를 졸업하고, 2001년 동대학원을 졸업하였다. 2001년에 첫 개인전을 공평아트센터에서 가졌고, 그 외에 2003년에 인천신세계갤러리에서 기획한 인천여행展, 2005년에 금호미술관에서 기획한 금호 영 아티스트 프로그램 참여 오래된 아파트展, 그리고 2009년에는 갤러리현대에서 아버지의 날展을 개최하였다. 《인천여행》에서 작가는 인천으로 여행하는 여행자, 이방인의 시선으로 자신이 느낀 느낌, 그곳의 정서를 다큐멘터리적으로 그려내었다. 정재호는 주로 한지와 먹을 이용한다. 이 시리즈에 있는 작품들은 작가의 인천여행을 고스란히 담아놓은 작품들이다. 작가의 여행기를 기록한 시리즈가 《인천여행》이였다면,《오래된 기념비》는 작가와 같은 세월을 보내 이제는 낡고 오래되어서 철거해야만 하는 운명에 놓인 아파트들의 세월을 기록한 시리즈이다. 아파트의 역사를 알기 위해 동사무소를 찾아가 아파트들에 대해 조사를 하고, 직접 아파트를 방문하여 재개발로 사람들이 떠나 비어진 건물에 남아있는 세월의 흐름을 기록하였다. 정면에서 본 듯한 아파트작품은 창문들로 프레임을 가득 채웠다. 전통적인 원근법을 무시하는 구조라서 어색하기도 하지만 작가는 각 가구의 세월의 흐름을 세세히 기록하여 보여주었다. 그리고 아파트의 세월의 흔적, 살았던 주민들의 세월의 흔적을 기록하고 기념하기 위해 작가는 그의 작품들을 기념비라고 부른다. 《아버지의 날》은 오래된 사진과 역사 속에서 찾을 수 있는 세월의 흐름을 기록하는 작품들이다. 현재를 대변하는 인간의 ‘삶’보다는 인간과 유령, 현재와 과거, 아버지와 아들 사이에 공생하는 삶의 제취, 세월의 흔적을 폐허로 표현하였다. 현재에는 존재하지 않은 과거는 폐허로 변해 작가가 만들어낸 시공간, 그의 작품 안에 존재한다. 작품 어디에도 장소를 가르키는 문구나 상호는 존재하지 않지만 작품 안에 그려진 세월의 흔적은 그 곳이 존재하였음을 알려준다. 작가는 기념비를 세우는 대신, 아버지의 날이라는 이름으로 세월의 흔적을 기념했다. 현재 정재호의 작품은 국립현대미술관, 서울시립미술관 등에 작품이 소장되어있고, 작가는 세종대학교 예체능대학 회화과 교수로서 작업을 하고 있다.
