About Gallery Hyundai

After opening its doors as “Hyundai Hwarang” on April 4, 1970, in Insa-dong, Seoul, Gallery Hyundai has played a leading role in introducing contemporary art to a scene once centered on traditional paintings and calligraphy-oriented works. It was through Gallery Hyundai that artists such as Lee Jung Seob and Park Soo-Keun, now celebrated as Korea’s most beloved modern masters, gained broader public recognition. The gallery also laid an early foundation for the international appreciation of Korean abstraction by presenting landmark exhibitions with Kim Hwanki, Yoo Youngkuk, Yun Hyong-keun, Kim Tschang-Yeul, Park Seo-bo, Chung Sang-Hwa, Kim Guiline, and Lee Ufan, long before the global rise of Dansaekhwa.

From the 1980s onward, Gallery Hyundai has further expanded its vision onto the international stage through exhibitions featuring major global figures like Joan Miró, Marc Chagall, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Christo and Jeanne-Claude Denat de Guillebon, Tomás Saraceno, and Robert Indiana. In 1987, it became the first Korean gallery to participate in an international art fair, introducing Korean art to global audiences at the Chicago Art Fair. The gallery has also showcased Nam June Paik’s groundbreaking performances and video art, as well as many works by leading figures in Korean experimental art, including Quac Insik, Seung-taek Lee, Kwak Duck-Jun, Park Hyunki, Lee Kun-Yong, Lee Kang So, and Sung Neung Kyung. To this day, Gallery Hyundai remains dedicated to supporting artists who continue to push the boundaries of contemporary art across generations and disciplines. Representing significant emerging, mid-career, and established voices, the gallery works with Choong Sup Lim, Kim Bohie, Choi Minhwa, Ik-Joong Kang, Yun-Hee Toh, Minjung Kim, Yoo Geun-Taek, Moon Kyungwon, Jeon Joon, Chung Zuyoung, Park Minjoon, Seulgi Lee, Myoung Ho Lee, Kang Seung Lee, Ayoung Kim, Christine Sun Kim, Jin Han Lee, Woosung Lee, and Kim Sung Yoon. Beyond exhibitions, the gallery actively supports its artists through publications and collaborations with leading museums and institutions worldwide.

Gallery Hyundai’s commitment to discourse and documentation has also been central to its legacy. The art magazines Hwarang and Hyundai Misul, first published by the gallery in 1973 and 1988, remain vivid records of their contemporary art scenes. In addition to its two locations, Gallery Hyundai and Hyundai Hwarang in Samcheong-ro, the gallery also operates a Project Space in Chelsea, New York.

1970년 4월 4일, 인사동에 ‘현대화랑’으로 첫발을 내디딘 갤러리현대는 고서화 위주의 화랑가에 현대미술을 선보이는 파격적 행보이며 미술계 흐름을 선도해 왔다. 이제는 ‘국민화가’로 평가받는 이중섭과 박수근의 작품이 갤러리현대를 통해 세상에 빛을 보았고, 김환기, 유영국, 윤형근, 김창열, 박서보, 정상화, 이우환, 김기린 등 추상 미술의 거장과 함께 전시를 개최하며 단색화 열풍이 일기 오래전부터 추상 미술의 저변 확대에 기여했다.

1980년대 이후 국제 미술계의 흐름에 발맞춰 호안 미로, 마르크 샤갈, 장 미셀 바스키아, 크리스토 부부 등 해외 거장의 미술관급 전시를 열며 미술계 안팎의 화제를 모았고, 1987년부터 한국 갤러리 최초로 해외 아트페어인 시카고 아트페어에 참가하며 한국 미술을 해외 무대에 소개하는 선구적 역할을 했다. 백남준의 퍼포먼스와 비디오아트를 비롯해 곽인식, 이승택, 곽덕준, 박현기, 이건용, 이강소, 성능경 등 한국의 실험미술을 주도한 작가의 작품도 갤러리현대에서 많은 관객과 만났다. 이밖에 임충섭, 김보희, 최민화, 강익중, 도윤희, 김민정, 유근택, 문경원, 전준, 정주영, 박민준, 이슬기, 이명호, 이강승, 김아영, 김 크리스틴 선, 이진한, 양정욱, 이우성, 김성윤 등 동시대 미술을 이끄는 중견 및 신진 작가를 지속해서 발굴 및 소개하고 있다.

각각 1973년과 1988년 창간된 미술전문지 『화랑』과 『현대미술』은 한국의 동시대 아트씬을 생생하게 기록한 자료로 남아있다. 서울 삼청로에 갤러리현대와 현대화랑이라는 두 전시장 이외에, 뉴욕 첼시에 한국 미술을 알리는 플랫폼인 프로젝트 스페이스도 운영 중이다.
