Gallery Hyundai is pleased to present the retrospective exhibition Shin Sung Hy: Solution de Continuité. The artist has contemplated flatness, a basic condition of painting, with an oeuvre that overcame the limitations of flatness in innovative ways.
In the 1970’s the artist created hyper-realistic paintings featuring the depiction of jute or hemp like material painted directly onto a jute canvas, as well as monochrome paintings that interspersed the front and back sides of the canvas. In the 1980’s the artist presented collage works that consisted of torn and colored cardboard pieces glued onto the canvas. The Solution de Continuité series appeard in the 1990s in which the artist cut colored canvases into strips and reconstituted via stitching. Finally, in the 2000’s Shin continued his journey via his Nouage works consisting of weaved color strips brought together and secured by cutting the canvas and creating a mesh rather than via stitching.
The sheer experimental spirit of the artist who ceaselessly ruminated on the essence of paintings is reflected in the Solution de Continuité series. Through the series multidimensional space is created via the integration of flatness and three dimensionality. To accomplish this, the artist resolutely attempted the intriguing processes of deconstruction and construction. The Solution de Continuité series begins with abstract drawing-like paintings. The artist first painted colored dots and patches onto a canvas. Then he cut the canvas into strips measuring between 1 to 10 centimeters in width. In the end he stitched them together with a sewing machine. Via this technique, seams remain exposed and margins are coarsely cut. As such, the array of strips that continuously stitched arose. With this series, the artist created the space that he had strived for all his life to remain a painter, yet, at the same time to stay, refusing to stay its two dimensional limit.
Shin Sung Hy was born in Ansan, Korea in 1948 and graduated from the Department of Painting at Hongik University. In 1980 Shin moved to France and continued his artistic career for thirty years. His works are in the permanent collection of national and international institutions including UNESCO, Paris, National Foundation for Contemporary Art (FNAC), France, Metropolitan Art Museum Busan Museum of Art, Seoul Museum of Art, Whanki Museum, Ho-Am Art Museum. The artist has been the recipient of the Special Award at the 2nd Korean Art Grand-Prix Exhibition (1971), Special Award at the 18th Korean National Art Exhibition (1969), and Grand Prize at the Korean Young Artists Prize (1968). The artist remained active until his death in 2009.
