Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening

GALLERY HYUNDAI is pleased to present Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening, an exhibition by Kelvin Kyung Kun Park, Yang Jung Uk, and Seulgi Lee. The exhibition runs from December 7, 2016, to January 15, 2017. Starting with the exhibition, GALLERY HYUNDAI plans to host exhibitions supporting aspiring artists on a yearly basis.

This exhibition pays attention to the points of establishing relationship and communication among artists, works, and the audience. The exhibition takes a look at contemporary artworks that employ diverse perspectives on our daily lives and different relationships around us. By doing so, it suggests a perspective through which we can appreciate contemporary art. The participating artists of the current exhibition, Kelvin Kyung Kun Park, Yang Jung Uk, and Seulgi Lee, reinterpret their perspectives on the issue of relationship they experience as individuals and artists. The memories of space and time experienced by each artist are expressed through a wide range of media that include installation, video, and performance, and with diverse images that correspond to the memories. The resulting works generate points of contact that are new within the relationship among artists, works, and the audience.

Kelvin Kyung Kun Park(b.1978) presents Stairway to Heaven, a combination of performance and installation in the gallery space where complex relationships around us and the relationship between an artwork and its audience are materialized. The movement of emotions that occur within different relationships is expressed through bodily gestures of performers, which is live-edited and screened during the opening of the exhibition. Park is known for his unique reinterpretation of everyday subjects through artistic practice that crosses the boundary of film and visual art.

Yang Jung Uk(b.1982) discovers narratives in everyday life and processes them to create art. In the current exhibition, Yang presents works that vary in their time of production as well as the themes and media. The artist introduces a work that conveys enlightenment that he realized while he was recovering from a wound on his leg; a relief that tells about the inner balance that individuals realize; and installations about two people that communicate through a phone call and people that are facing a disaster. In Yang’s work, everyday narratives that one might easily overlook extend themselves in the artist’s thoughts in which they are materialized in a synesthetic language as they acquire a dynamic rhythm.

With a perspective that is authentically humorous and witty, Seulgi Lee(b.1972) throws a fundamental question about ‘universality’ to the audience. Lee does so by giving new meanings to ordinary objects that one might pass by without paying much attention to. The artist assumes a blanket, a familiar everyday material, as a space on the border of dream and reality. She sheds new light on the relationship between individuals and the community by projecting proverbs on it, which leads to a change in how one recognizes existing concepts such as an artificially divided border.

The title of the exhibition, Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening, is taken from a poem written in 1922 by Robert Frost, a poet that took note of ordinary life of people. The original poem is a lyric poem that makes its readers sympathize with the narrator that appreciates beautiful scenery of wintry woods while not forgetting a sense of responsibility to his life. As the narrator of Frost’s poem experiences the relaxing scenery of the woods in a snowy evening as it is, the exhibition proposes to the audience to appreciate the stories and aesthetic value of each work in the exhibition as they exist.
