The 100th Anniversary of Birth Seundja Rhee's Abstract Painting 1957-1968

Gallery Hyundai cordially invites you to exhibition at the gallery's main space from September 6th until October 7th, 2018. Known as the period, works from this particular period represents the artist's art world as they portray pain she had to endure as a woman, yearning of her children, yearning of the mother country as an outsider, and also her own mother. Comprised of 30 works, this particular exhibition carries time period of France in the 1960s and it will show Rhee's transition not only from figurative to abstract, but also artist's change in academical point of view to an artist's perspective.

Born in Gwangyang in 1918, Rhee Seundja was one of the first artists to immigrate to Paris and started her study in fashion design in the 1950s. Then in 1953, the artist officially started to study painting at the Academie de al Grande Chaumiere. Rhee did not remain in one particular study, but experimented with prints, mosaics, tapestry, installation, and even pottery, gradually building her own particular art world expanding her horizon as an artist. She was first introduced to Korean art scene when she had her first solo exhibition at the Seoul National University in 1965 and afterwards, the artist had numerous solo exhibitions at Gallery Hyundai (Hyundai Hwarang), Chosun Ilbo Museum, and had four exhibitions at the National Museum of Art of Korea including recent 2018 retrospective exhibition which opened to celebrate 100th anniversary of the artist's birth. Rhee works are part of public collections including National Museum of Art, Musee d'art moderne et contemporain de Saint-Etienne, Fine Arts Museum of Nantes, Musée National d’Art Moderne, Paris, Leeum Samsung Museum of Art and more.
