MOON Kyungwon (b.1969) received her Ph.D. from Yonsei University Graduate School of Communication and Arts, M.F.A from the California Institute of the Arts and M.F.A/B.F.A from Ehwa Women’s University. She has her own peculiar way of questioning the history, individual, contradiction and existing relationships between the reality and an ideal through the image of specific space. She has been portraying connotative and narrative works by working with various media i.e. painting, video, and installation to employ visual expressions.
JEON Joonho (b.1969) received his M.A from Chelsea College of Art and Design and B.F.A from Dongeui University. JEON’s works mainly focus on the various incidents that encompass the tumultuous Korean history and the fundamental issues of human existentiality, from which he attempts to elicit questions from the viewer. The multi-layered reality he depicts remains universal at its core with his commentary on the general conditions of human beings. Moreover, with his refined expertise in creating images using different media, he is more than unique in regard to his artistic depth and technical virtuosity.
MOON Kyungwon and JEON Joonho have been contemplating together on contemporary art and its significance, expendability of exhibitions and absence of critiques. Consequently, two of them began collaboration since 2009 with hopes of creating more chances to produce self-reflective works. As a duo, MOON Kyungwon and JEON Joonho are conducting their collaborate project while also working separately as individual artists.
In 2012, JEON Joonho and MOON Kyungwon participated in Kassel documenta13 as the first Korean artist in the last 20 years. In the same year, they received the ‘Noon’ Art Prize from Gwangju Biennale and also ‘The Korea Artist Prize’ from the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea. They also have participated in Singapore Biennale(2013), Multitude Art Prize(2013), Sullivan Galleries of School of Art Institute of Chicago for the News from Nowhere: Chicago Laboratory(2013), Fukuoka Asian Art Triennale(2014), the 10th Anniversary Exhibition of Leeum, Samsung Museum of Art(2014). In 2015, they were selected as the representative artists of Korea for 56th Biennale di Venezia and presented their work at the Korean pavilion. In addition, they exhibited their work at Frieze London 2015 and currently, their collaborative project 'News from Nowhere' is shown at Migros Museum für Gegenwartskunst in Zurich, Switzerland.
